Is That AI … Really AI? A New Lyssn White Paper.

Here an AI, there an AI, everywhere an AI!! Everyone these days, from established SaaS companies, automakers, and e-commerce giants, to pop culture emergent tools like ChatGPT, claim artificial intelligence (AI) functionality as a core part of their value proposition. Even if we strictly focus on natural language processing (NLP) in mental health and human services – in which we task software with understanding, interpreting, rating, or otherwise responding to human language – the applications seem endless: dictation and note-taking for clinicians; evaluating the quality of therapeutic and behavior change interactions against existing metrics; identifying physical and behavioral symptoms that could be predictive of disease or dysfunction. The list is almost infinite.

The field of AI is rapidly expanding across sectors, and countless companies claim to offer AI products and services to behavioral health, human services, and wellness providers. However, it can be challenging for non-experts to evaluate these claims and determine what is truly “under the hood.” For example: Are the software providers’ offer and purported capabilities truly innovative and compliant, or is it simply legacy technology with slick new marketing and packaging? What type of long-term, clinical validation and customer testimonials across industries can the organization provide on demand?

In fact, claims about AI, or its functional synonyms data science, ML, computational linguistics, neural nets, etc., appear as warning labels on what otherwise is a black box. Sometimes the black box covers something that is ground-breaking . Others, it covers tech with jargon like “regular expressions” (i.e., fancy name for computerized ‘word search’ – not truly modern AI). The morass of jargon makes evaluating “AI”- based products and services nearly impossible for the non-technical expert.
