The training includes:
Module 1: Asking the Direct Question
- Practice directly asking, “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” and learn the importance of clear, specific language.
Module 2: Staying Present and Responding Empathically
- Develop skills to build empathy, stay present, and use active listening when clients disclose suicidal thoughts.
Module 3: Assessing Suicide Plans
- Learn techniques to sensitively inquire about potential suicide plans, including methods, means, and timing.
Module 4: Evaluating Access to Lethal Means
- Practice assessing a client’s access to potentially lethal means and appropriate follow-up questions.
Module 5: Determining Suicidal Intent
- Develop skills to ask about a client’s intent to act on suicidal thoughts, including using rating scales to gauge severity.
